Assuming you are an accomplished guitarist or at least a daily student, there are things every serious guitarist should know. You don’t have to be a walking library of cover tunes but it doesn’t hurt. Knowing guitar solos lick for lick is a neat skill, but even more than the solos, knowing the signature riffs and changes to cover songs is a gig winner. Unless you’re playing with a tribute band, most cover bands don’t care if you make the solo a little more “you” than the recording. Either way, learn the original solo and then make it yours. That’s how we all learn from the greats. When you learn a song or solo riff for riff, it introduces you to new things and new ways of thinking.

It’s a very busy world and it feels like everyone is bidding for your time. You have good intentions but it seems by the time you get home from school or work, you’re spent. Add to that the challenge of finding quality family time and you just have no energy left to give, much less inspiration for playing. If guitar is your passion, you will understand the joy of sitting for 30 minutes and just playing for you, no audience or distractions. It is therapy for your soul. Still, you will sigh and think to yourself, “If I only had more time...” You might even face harsh criticism and people you love the most might say something like, “If you’d put that stupid guitar down long enough, the yard might get mowed.” For you, guitar is part of who you are.

If you don’t have hair, maybe you should invest in a really cool hat. Add to this the right clothes and boots or sneakers and you’re almost there. Let’s move beyond the clothes. Yes, you got to have the moves and stage presence. It’s not enough to just play great guitar, if you’re gonna be a rock star, you gotta have the swag. Perception is the name of the game. Show up with groupies and a guitar tech and you’re getting closer. Still, you have to be able to play.

These days, there are so many options available to you when it comes to learning guitar. The best way to learn guitar on a budget? There’s really no excuse for not pursuing your passion. If you are passionate about golf, you’ll find a way to buy the balls and pay the fees. It’s an expensive sport, but you find a way. If you are on a budget, do you mean you really don’t make enough to fuel your passion for guitar, or do you mean after golf and other hobbies you don’t have enough? If you’re as passionate about guitar as we are, we suggest you cut something else loose so you can afford to take on some guitar lessons. It takes significant time to get good at guitar.
