FREE LESSON
PHIL KEAGGY - Grammy nominated and seven-time Dove Award winner, is one of the world’s great guitar players and a pioneer in contemporary Christian music.
If you’re looking for free guitar lessons, you can find several options out there. So many that, in fact, it can be hard to find a great one amongst the useless pile of meh and so so lessons.
Not to worry, we’ve done some digging for you, bringing you top choices from YouTube, Guitar Lesson sites and apps for your iOS and Android devices. While different from one-on-one personal guitar lessons, and some of the best sites are paid sites, these free lessons should help to give you a taste of what online lessons are like and get you off to a great start.
Not only that, but some of these free apps are actually fun. They took a very video game approach to learning how to rock, so they can be quite addictive. So put down Plants vs. Zombies for a minute and grab your guitar. We’re starting with the one of the most fun free apps available today
It’s a free app and you don’t even have to give your email. Download to your favorite Android or iOS device and you’re off and running within minutes. Yousician has a pretty quick, intuitive set up process, where you are asked to give your skill level and choose what you are interested in learning.
Along the way, you are guided by a friendly bloke with a kewl British accent. He helps you tune your instrument up (with provided in-app tuner), explains tablature, and then you are given a quick test to see if you can play along. This is where the fun starts. If you’ve ever played guitar hero you will quickly pick up on the style of learning. A nice touch is that you play along with a drum loop and you’re guided by a floating line that leads you to each upcoming note. Plus you’re given encouraging and helpful text bubbles every single time you hit a note, Perfect! a bit early, a bit late, good, all pop up every single time you hit a note. Even with all that info, it’s laid out well enough that it never seems in the way.
After your initial assessment, you are automatically taken straight to a lesson and graded every single time. It’s easy to lose track of time because it's more like playing a game than practicing guitar. There’s always a catch though, right? The whole time I was wondering how they make such an awesome app available for free. Then my time ran out… Aha, limited lesson time. If you would like unlimited lesson time, then you need to purchase a subscription, anywhere from $9.99 a month if you want to commit to a full year, all the way up to $19.99 if you would like to pay monthly. Still, even without the paid subscription there are a lot of good times to be had for free on Yousician if you don’t mind the interruptions and listed lesson times.
There are literally millions of free guitar lessons on youtube. Again, they’re free and some of them are even taught by the same musicians that wrote the songs. The big drawback is wading through endless pages of underwhelming material. Nate Savage has a great page with hundreds of free lessons https://www.youtube.com/user/guitarlessonscom Nate is a great teacher, the videography is professional, and it has all of the helpful tabs and chord charts you will need to get started.
For beginners, Andy Guitar https://www.youtube.com/user/andycrowley has an awesome YouTube channel with clear, simple lesson plans. Andy has a positive, enthusiastic demeanor (and cool accent), and walks you slowly through everything you need to know to get started. He’s pretty much everything you could hope for in a beginning guitar teacher.
If you’re cool on all of the basics and you just want to rock out to all of your favorite jams Carl Brown from Guitar Lessons 365 https://www.youtube.com/user/GuitarLessons365 can shred… everything from advanced warm up exercises to the most epic and iconic guitar solos in rock n roll, all taught by this laid back, super talented teacher. One added bonus is that not only the videography, but the audio quality is top notch, making it very enjoyable to listen to and play along as Carl teaches you the fine art of shredding.
There are thousands of great options and at the end of the day, you just have to find someone whose approach is a good fit for you. The cool thing is that once you’re into these channels you can see a lot of great “related channels”.

Jamplay is a guitar site that has free guitar lessons that allows you to take one free beginner lesson from each of their teachers, It’s nice to be able to sample the goods before you decide to pony up for a full paid subscription. Guitartricks offers a 14 day free trial, which is nice. They also feature a lot of the popular songs, so learning your favorite tunes is fast and simple. Rounding out the top free lessons from paid sites is Artistworks. Featuring 7 phenomenal guitarists and their unique video exchange, artist works is a good learning resource, but it comes at a hefty price, topping the charts at three times the monthly cost of prolessons.com. Although, it should be noted that none of these are mutually exclusive and you can sign up for several of your favorite subscription based sites, and have access to thousands of videos every day for less then the price of most once a week private lessons.
