For all you Casanovas out there, there are some love songs you can serenade your significant other with on guitar. In fact, some of the best love songs on guitar aren't that challenging. You can play and sing a classic for him or her or you can turn to something a little more recent. Just be determined and we’ll help you succeed. The first step is finding a song you can sing. Some pop songs are way out of range for the average guy or gal. You’ll need to lower the key to make it right. With guitar, that can be as easy as using a capo. If you can play your basic chords like G, C, D, Emi, Ami, etc., you can play lots of songs and even some sappy love songs. Let’s dive into some of the best love songs on guitar.
Modern Love Songs on Guitar
“Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake is pretty high and out of range for most guys, but you can just do it in Emi and it’ll be much easier to pull off. The chords are simply Emi, Ami, Bmi, G, C, and D. Now what’s cool is you can move a capo up and down the neck with these chords until you find a key that’s best for you. Try the capo on the 2nd fret and try Emi, Bmi, and C. Sing along and see if that works. This one is wordy, but if you can get it out, it’s one of the great love songs on guitar.
“Love Story” by Taylor Swift is an easy little tune if you’re the girl singing the song. Most all of these catchy little love songs are 3 or 4 chord tunes and easy to strum which makes them great choices for best love songs on guitar. It’s the simple melodies that make the best love songs and are usually easiest to pull off. This Taylor Swift song is one of those and you’ll have fun playing it.
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran is contemporary love song done on acoustic guitar and can be simplified for any level of player. The key may be a factor but again that is something you can fix with a capo or just change the G instead of D. Try to nail the little things like the groovy little finger tricks done on this tune. If that’s out of reach, just strum the guitar and sing. The melody and words will bring the tune to life for your lover and the guitar will just be your wingman. Don’t stress over this. You can do it.
Best Love Songs on Guitar - The Classics
“I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton and later Whitney Houston is one of the best love songs of all time. It’s a very simple song to play on guitar and, as long as you don’t try to upstage Whitney, it’s not too hard to sing. The chords in G are as simple as G, Emi, C, and D. If G is too low or high, capo along the guitar neck and find the perfect key for your range.
“To Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan is a sleeper, meaning if you’re not careful, the lyrics to this great love song will dig into you and have you sobbing. Make sure you sing it several times so you get used to the lyrics and don’t have a meltdown while you’re performing for your intended audience. Again, use G Major and move it up if you need to using a capo. G, D, F, C, Cmi, and Ami, are very common chords. The Cmi is best played using a barre chord, so work on that, but the rest are very easy.
“Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis Presley is hands down one of the sweetest love songs ever. The bridge takes on a lift but it’s super easy to play. Do this one in C if you’re a guy or girl who sings really high or soprano. If you’re somewhere in the middle, try G. Use the capo to explore a more comfortable key. G, D, Emi, C, and Bmi are the keys in G. C, G, Ami, F, and Emi are the chords for the key of C. It’s really up to your ability, but many of the best love songs on guitar can be simplified even more to 3 chord songs. Sometimes you can substitute a G for an Emi for example. It doesn’t sound as pretty as the correct way, but it still works harmonically. Try it if you have trouble changing chords.
“I Want To Know What Love Is” by Foreigner is a favorite. Man, you can really sing your soul out on this one. An acoustic guitar version of this song would give it a fresh take and we bet you could make her melt with this one. Capo on 2 and you can do this beautiful love song in A. You can also play it in G. The chords for that are Emi, G, Ami, C, and D. The pre-chorus has a Bmi/A in it, but that’s as simple as sliding your Ami chord over 2 frets and keeping the A string open. Try it out because this is one of the best love songs on guitar.
“Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison is the most obvious acoustic guitar love song in the world. We’re trying to hook you up with love songs that are easy to play here, so give the original a listen and see if you can sing it in G. This song uses a simple G5 to C2 transition in the verses. You can’t get any more doable than that. G5, C2, and D are about it. Try to pick a song that your voice can sing and emulate well. You don’t have to sing like the original but it should be uniquely you. Otherwise, it’ll just be cheesy. That’s probably not what you’re going for.
For one last retro option, “You Are My Sunshine” is one of the best love songs on guitar for fans of the oldies (or the Little Rascals). Don’t get caught up on playing perfectly. Just try your best and pick a song that you think he or she will appreciate. If your heart’s in the right place and you’ve picked a decent love song, you’ll win the day.
